about

I began the process of constructing my second album Clean in January 2016 while attending the Banff Creative Arts Centre in Alberta, Canada. I had been listening to Kendrick Lamar's Too Pimp a Butterfly, Philip Glass' Glassworks, and Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians a lot in the previous year and wanted to incorporate elements of each into a modern jazz record. While in high school, I listened to a lot of hip hop and was fascinated by the story telling element in many of my favorite records. Kendrick's album reminded me of this and I wanted create an album that flowed more like a hip hop record than a jazz album primarily composed of heads encompassing solos.

With this idea in mind, a few life experiences helped shape the sound of this record. At the Banff Centre, I was the only jazz musician in residence. Most of the other musicians where classical musicians practicing their craft, and there was no bass player. How could I make my type of improvised music with this specific group of musicians? This was my challenge. The answer came with composing specific parts for bassoon, cello, piano, and drums thus creating a unique sonic texture to aid in the story telling of my album.

In the middle of my stay at the Banff Centre a tragedy occurred at my home in New York City. Romulo Herrera, a father, chef at the Cornelia Street Cafe for over twenty years, and all around great person was murdered in his home during a break in. Hearing the news of this incident was almost incomprehensible to me, as it was the last thing I ever expected to happen. Generally not musically sentimental, I composed a piece for Romulo upon learning of his passing. It's entitled Romulo's Raga and sets the stage for four more pieces like it on this record. Composed of woodwind octet plus piano these pieces act as short segues between longer compositions that hold the album together, much like Romulo did to those around him.

The other pieces on this record come from encounters, stories, and experiences in my day to day life. Clean was a nick name given to me at Camp Encore/Coda where I am a faculty member. The musical goal of the piece was to create something the entire faculty of twenty plus musicians could play on. Dirty Curty is about a friend of mine who didn't shower for three months, in which time he met the love of his life. They have been together for almost 20 years and recently had twins. The Generator is the name of my nerdy compositional method in which I turn words or phrases into songs.

Thank you so much to the Banff Creative Arts Centre for it's support and space to be free in my music. Thank you to the Cornelia Street Cafe for giving me a home (and work schedule) to perform my music in. Thank you to all my friends and peers who continue to make my music happen and push me to be better in every way. And thank you for listening to my work, I hope you enjoy!
